Your hair is more fragile than you think. It can be burned beyond repair with fire, smoothing irons, and hair color chemicals. But it has strength and along with bones, hair will last after the body has deteriorated.
But since we’re not in the mood for the grave let’s talk about how your hair can last right now. Chemicals used in hair coloring can weaken hair structure beyond repair when used improperly. Did you know a diluted solution of hydrogen is used for hair coloring? It’s added to oxygen and called H2O2 or hydrogen peroxide. It’s the same hydrogen used in making a hydrogen bomb and it is more powerful than the bomb that destroyed a couple of cities during WWII.
You might wonder why they allow hair stylists to use such a powerful chemical. Well, first of all, it’s a diluted solution and won’t cause a mushroom cloud (although I have seen hair smoke when heat is applied to bleach and hydrogen peroxide). Yep, it can destroy the hair but leave everything else in the room intact. Secondly, professionals are trained to handle those chemicals with respect. At The Color Café Salon, we analyze each person’s hair and know when it’s okay to use these chemicals so the hair won’t be damaged beyond repair.
Think of a cross section of your hair like a chocolate chip cookie. Think of those chocolate chips like they are pouches of color in your hair. When hydrogen peroxide is used to remove the color it’s like taking the chocolate chips out of the cookie. All you have left is the crumbles. Now try to put those chocolate chips back into the cookie and they won’t stay.
That’s like trying to add color back into hair that is damaged. It won’t stay either.
The best advice is to trust the professional colorists at The Color Café Salon when she (he) says that what you’re asking for won’t be good for your hair. Our professional colorists have experience and knowledge. Let them offer you an alternative if they think your hair color request isn’t good for your hair. Their goal is to color your hair but to make it last so it will be beautiful long after you leave the salon.
